Shylock was a Jew and respected the religion a lot and wanted his daughter to too. So it was against Jewish custom that a Jew girl married someone of a different religion. So he was against the marriage.
Also, when she took the idea of converting her religion, he got angry. He did want his daughter to abandon his native religion for a outsider religion boy.
