Why is it that stomata are open during the day and closed at night?

Stomata is open during the day as well as during the night.During the day, stomata takes in carbon dioxide and sunlight and during the night it takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide.

The opening and closing of the pore is a function of the guard cells. The guard cells swell when water flows into them, causing the stomatal pore to open. Simillarly the pore closes if the guard cells shrink
