The roadside stand is written by Robert Frost who experiences the pain of the poor farmers that indulge into small businesses but do not achieve any profit.
The poet mentions 'It would not be fair to say for a dole of bread' which means that it would be unfair for the farmers who are working very hard everyday to make a living. They make small stalls to make a living. They don't do begging but instead live in their own hard work. Even though the farmers make lesser money with the stalls they want to keep their self respect and maintain it. Even though their life was pathetic they need to put all the effort for a dole of bread that is for some food for themselves.
