The cerebral cortex is the largest part of the human brain that surrounds, supports and controls most of the other brain structures. It is responsible for quite a variety of functions and many complex thinking processes, which makes it hard for to paticularly concentrate and focus on a  subject. Hence it is good that the cerebral cortex stays unaware of many functions of the brain.
