- The city of Johannesburg, also called ‘Joburg’, ‘Jozi’ and ‘eGoli’, located in South Africa, is called ‘the city of Gold’, beacause the city came into existence because of gold.
- Around 1884, gold was found in a farm on the Witwatersrand hill ranges. The discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand area led to flocking of people to that area. This is known as the Gold Rush of 1880s.
- Population increased and the city developed around 1886. It was named Johannesburg.
- The gold reef was closest to the surface at the centre of the city.
- As the city was built on gold and as it came into existence because of the discovery of the gold, it is called ‘the city of Gold’.
- The city was rebuilt 4 times within 100 years and now it is the largest city in South Africa.
- Besides being ‘the city of Gold’, it is also called ‘the Cradle of Humankind’ as it has the largest number of human fossils.
