Why is Jonathan surprised that his house in Enugu is still intact?

Enugu was being bombed during the war and Jonathan had to leave his home just as it was.
His ex-miner friends reported that his house was destroyed.
He was sad but when he saw his house still intact then he was surprised because a much stronger home two blocks away was reduced to rubble during the war.
This is the reason he was surprised.
