Why is Jonathan surprised that his house in Enugu is still intact?

Enugu was being bombed during the war and Jonathan had to leave his home just as it was.

His ex-miner friends reported that his house was destroyed.

He was sad but when he saw his house still intact then he was surprised because a much stronger home two blocks away was reduced to rubble during the war.

This is the reason he was surprised.

We are introduced by the narrator to a man called Jonathan lwegbu, who considers himself very lucky after returning alive from the Nigerian civil war.

It was a remarkable occasion that not only most of his family comprising his wife and three children returned with him , but he has got back his old bicycle.

Bcoz of his luck, his nieghboursgreet one another : There he faced a great surprised that his house Enugu is still standing.

Although it is small and hand made of zinc,wood, and cardboard it has survived.
