Karna is considered to be superior to Arjuna because he was considered the mightiest warrior by Lord Krishna.

Lord Krishna knew that Arjuna wouldn't have succeeded to defeat Karna, so the Lord had to drain the wheel of Karna's chariot in order to kill Maharathi Karna.
