Karnad  Sadashiva Rao was born to an effluent lawyer Ramachandra Rao and Radhabai in Mangalore in 1881. Though born in a rich family he spent his entire wealth on the well being of Indians.He is remembered as a social reformer, a humanitarian, a patriotic person who served his entire life for the poor and helpless people.The  great Kannada writer Dr. Shivaram Karanth, referred him as a "Dharmaraj"

He went to the Presidency college in Madras and then went to Bombay to study law. He was inspired by  the Indian nationalistic movement that became the focal point during that period.

He along with his wife Shantabai, he formed an organization "Mahila Sabha" which aimed at providing a better life for the widows and other neglected women. He helped them through his personal wealth to provide education and also train them to be independent. He took up the issue of  organizing re-marriage of child-widows, which was a big hurdle during that time. He served as the President of "Mission for Depressed Classes" and even worked for the rights of the Harijans to enter the temples of South Kanara district.

He opened a school "Tilak Vidya;aya"  for all communities in his home. Various activities like, weaving, spinning, handicrafts along with Hindi language was taught there. He is credited with put an end to animal sacrifice at Kali temples.

During 1919 he got actively involved in India`s struggle for independence and soon became the first volunteer from Karnataka to be a part of the great movement.

Karnad Sadashiva Rao (1881 – 9 January 1937)[1] was an Indian freedom fighter from Karnataka, India. Rao was born to a wealthy Mangalorean family in 1881. He studied at Presidency College in Madras and also studied law in Mumbai.

Rao became involved in the Indian independence movement. He founded Mahila Sabha to help widows and poor women. By 1919, he was fully involved in the Indian independence movement, being one of the first from Karnataka to volunteer for Gandhi's Satyagraha movement. He was also one of the key members of the Congress Party and was responsible for expanding the party in Karnataka.

He is referred to as "Dharmaraj" (embodiment of charity) by Dr. Shivaram Karanth, the great Kannada writer, whose famous novel "Oudaryada Urulalli" is centered around a Sadashiv Rao-like hero.
