Why is lemon and tamarind used for cleaning copper pots or vessels?

The copper vessels are tarnished due to the formation of copper oxide due to oxidation of the metal.
Copper oxide is basic in nature.
The lemon or tamarind juice contains citric or tartaric acid which reacts with the basic oxide and the neutralization reaction takes place. Due to neutralization, the vessels are cleaned.

As they contain tartaric acid in them, they cause a chemical reaction and that's why the copper vessel gets cleaned....
