The copper vessels are tarnished due to the formation of copper oxide due to oxidation of the metal.
Copper oxide is basic in nature.
The lemon or tamarind juice contains tartaric acid which reacts with the basic oxide and the neutrilization reaction takes place. Due to neutrilization, the vessels are cleaned.
