Liechtenstein was a poor country. Before the World War II, Liechtenstein had a good connection to Austria, but they didn't want to be a part of the Nazi Germany, and Austria put up an embargo. So the prince who lived in Vienna, Prince Franz Josef II, was the first Prince of Liechtenstein to take up permanent residence in Liechtenstein, and looked to neighboring (neutral) Switzerland for assistance and guidance.

After the war, the prince sold off a lot of art, and with the money, he started to modernize Liechtenstein's economy: the companies Hilti, Hilcona AG, and Ivoclar Vivadent became bigger and bigger.

In the late 1970s, Prince Hans Adam gave the "rucksack rede" (in english something like "backpack speech"). He asked people of Liechtenstein to decide to go to Bern and really become a part of Switzerland or take now the "backpack full of knowledge" (that's why this speech is known as backpack speech) and be again a sovereign state .... so the economy grows and later Liechtenstein bacome a part of the NATO (before Switzerland) and a part of the Common Market (predecessor to the European Union).
