Light reaction of photosynthesis produces ATP and NADPH which provide energy required for Dark reaction of photosynthesis in which CO2 from atmosphere is fixed to produce glucose, the simplest source of energy. Light reaction occurs only in the presence of sunlight because plants use light energy to produce chemical energy in form of ATP and NADPH.

Hence, leaves of all photosynthetic plants grow in patterns so that they can absorb and utilize as much sunlight as possible.
