why is lower end of a nail tapering and sharp whereas upper end is broad?

lower end is tapering because:
due to smaller surfaces area it can easily enter enter into a hard piece of wood or other things
upper part is broader because :
due to larger surface area it can be easily bitten at the upper end so that the lower part can enter into the wood easily
