Every thinker is supposed to be a child of his own time, but it suits Machiavelli the most.

The phrase implies that he was influenced by his time.

For eg. he is also called as “the child of Renaissance”, because he belong to a time when medival age was coming to an end and modern age was about to start i.e. the age of renaissance.

During the age of renaissance, the most important change was the rise of Nation State. But Italy (he belonged to Italy) was not a Nation State, it was dominated by Church, which was extremely corrupt. Therefore he suggests separation of religion and politics and supports the idea of Nation State.

Born in the year 1469 in Florence (Italy) Machiavelli belonged to an affluent family and was well educated for a public career. The first theorist to free political science or philosophy of religion and morality was Machiavelli. He was not interested in high ideals of morality and religion. He focused mainly on power and the state's functional or political interests. The Prince in particular and government in general would be mainly concerned with protecting the interests of the State.

EXPLANATION:

Machiavelli was the first thinker to take a clear stance on religious, social, and ethical relations, on the one hand, and political relationship, on the other. His stance on politics, morality, and religion was very clear. Machiavelli did not denounce morality, religion and virtue. However, he stressed that moral and religious matters differ greatly from political ones, and the prince has to preserve them in his mental treatment of politics. Machiavelli had set a new policy standard and that politics norm has no connection with the traditional morality or ethics. Machiavelli condemned his contemporary political philosophies for not focusing on the value of power. The major aspect of political theory is in his opinion strength. the influence of the environment is no more obvious in any system of political philosophy than that of Machiavelli. The brilliant Florentine was the child of his time in the fullest sense. In the case of Machiavelli, the influence of contemporary events often falls upon the thinking person.

In social, political and in some ways economic in many European states and the Florence of Machiavelli and other countries the Renaissance caused turmoil. The modern Italy of Machiavelli has split into the following five countries–the Kingdom of Napoli in the south and Milan in the north-west. Machiavelli was convinced that this division of Italy is the origin of Italy's backwardness and many ills. Italy's unification was therefore the burning question because it felt strongly that change could not be accomplished without unification. Not only that, Italy as a whole was heavily affected by corruption and maladministration. The need for the time was a strong and powerful ruler and Machiavelli focused on it. He was persuaded that Italy could only be save from peace, destruction and debauchery by a strong prince. Most Western critics prefer to call Machiavelli the child of Renaissance and Florence, in his personality appear all the qualities which characterize his own and age. The Renaissance arrival changed this situation, and by adding its own justification, people began to think about faith, beliefs etc.
