Magnesium ribbon must be cleaned before burning in air so that the layer of the magnesium oxide ( which is formed due to the reaction of magnesium with air) can be removed in order to get the desired chemical reaction.

Explanation:

The magnesium ribbon which we use usually has a coating of magnesium oxide on its surface which is formed by slow action of air on it. so, before burning in air, the magnesium ribbon is cleaned by rubbing with a sand paper, This is done to remove the protective layer of magnesium oxide from the surface of magnesium ribbon.

Additional information :-

When magnesium burns in air, it combines with the oxygen of air to form magnesium oxide.

Chemical equation :-

  • 2Mg + O2 -> 2MgO
  • This is the example of combination reaction.
  • Magnesium oxide are basic in nature.
