why is magnitude of the displacement is not always equal to the distance travelled​

magnitude of displacement :

it is the shortest path covered.

magnitude of distance :

only the actual path covered.

take for ex

two points A & B as shown below :-

1. A~~~~~~~~~B

2. A------------------B

1st case is of distance as just randomly going in any direction to reach to point B

2nd case is of displacement as it the shortest way to go to B

Displacement is the shortest distance between two points. And as we know the shortest distance between two points is always a straight line (this may not be applicable in the case of a larger distance because it is a globe and so the shortest distance is a curved line)
