Meiosis is called reductional divisionbecause there occur reduction of chromosome during this process. This process occurs during formation of male and female gametes, so that when fertization occurs embryo regain its diploid chromosome number. ... Thus, meiosis occurs only in bisexual reproductive cells.

Meiosis is known as reductional division because the parent cell produces four daughter cells produces four daughter cells each having half the number of chromosomes present in the parent cell.
