Melting of iron is a physical change. This is because the physical state of iron(solid) changes into another physical state(liquid). The chemical properties of iron are same as they were before melting. In contrast to this, Rusting of iron is a chemical change because when Iron oxide comes in contact with a variable amount of water, a flaky brown coloured substance called rust is formed. The properties of rust are completely different from the properties of iron. Hence, Rusting of iron is a chemical change.
