Because of the behavior of the valence electrons,mercury has a low melting point, is a poor electrical and thermal conductor and doesn't form diatomicmercury molecules in the gas phase. It has low melting point which is even low than that of room temperature. It's melting point is -38.83 °C and room temperature is about 20°C which is much higher compared to mercury's melting point which makes it to be liquid in room temperature.
