As mercury as high boiling point it can be used to measure high temperatures and as mercury is brightly coloured we can easily see the readins made by the thermometer based on the temperature.

Mercury is used because:
i) It does not stick to the glass,
ii) It has a low boiling point so it measures temperature accurately,
iii) Mercury's expansion is uniform at all temperature.
