Mitochondria are double membraned structures. They may be rod-shaped or spherical. The inner membrane shows several fingerlike infoldings which are called cristae. There is a space between two membranes. The space is filled with respiratory enzymes. A cell may contain a few hundreds to five one hundred thousand mitochondria.
Function: They help in cellular respiration. Food is oxidized in the mitochondria and energy is produced in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate).Mitochondria are, therefore, popularly known as the power house of the cell.
