Mitochondria help the cell manufacture ATP (Energy currency of the cell). It takes part in aerobic respiration - (the conversion of nutrients into energy yielding molecule ATP, to fuel the cell activities .)

ATP is to transport energy within the cell for metabolism.Since the ATP is produced in the mitochondria, the mitochondria are called the 'Powerhouse' of the cell.
