lAverage animal cells may have 1000 - 2000 according some sources. But, Mitochondria are not just free-floating little “powerhouses” that look like footballs. They fuse together and make long spaghetti-like strands and they can break apart into smaller mitochondria if the cell wants them too. I would venture to say that cheek cells lean towards having more small ones since cheek cells divide and die so quickly and they are constantly producing and secreting mucus
