Why is modern periodic table considered to be improvement over mendeleev's table?

Modern periodic table is on the function of atomic number but mendleevs on the basis of atomic mass.

Modern periodic table is considered to be improvement over mendeleev table because it is based on atomic number,which is an even better fundamental property compared to atomic mass.
