bcuz :-
( i ) mercury has high melting and Boiling point for making it a liquid at room temperature.
( ii ) mercury is a metal So it has a stable coefficient of expansion hence it expands uniformly and noticeably for a slight change of temperature.
( iii ) It is helpful in readings.
( iv ) It will not expand when it solidifies hence it doesn’t break the glass tube of the thermometer.
