Why is myopia called nearsightedness or short sightedness

Myopia is called short sightedness or near sightedness . To understand why it is called near or short sightedness ,we need to understand the meaning of sightedness .

Now sightedness is the ability to see .Myopic people can see closer objects clearly ,that means they have short sightedness / near sightedness.

But as for far things ,they aren't able to see ,because light rays falling from distant objects are falling in front of the retina.So Myopic people do not have far sightedness as they cannot see distant objects clearly .but they however have near sightedness ,meaning they have the ability to look at closer things .Hope you get it.
