A chemical equation should be balanced in order to satisfy "Law of Conservation of Mass".
While balancing an equation the number of atoms of each elements should be equal in both sides that is LHS and RHS.
Example of a balanced chemical equation :-
>>>≥> 2Mg + O2 -----> 2MgO

An equation must be balanced in order to comply with the LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MATTER which states that matter is neither created nor destroyed in the course of a chemical reaction. An unbalanced chemical equation would imply that atoms have been created or destroyed.
