every body will be in state of rest unless it is acted by an external force. For example the chair will be in state of rest unless acted by an external force. inertia means the body will be in state of rest unless an external force is applied. so newtons 1st law is called law of inertia.

QUESTION:- why is Newton 's first law of motion also known as law of inertia

ANSWER:- NEWTONS FIRST LAW

EVERYBODY CONTINUES IN ITS STATE OF REST OR OF UNIFORM MOTION ALONG A STRAIGHT LINE UNLESS IT IS COMPELLED BY AN EXTERNAL UNBALANCED FIRCE TO CHANGE THE STATE

and this Newton 's first law of motion is generally called as "LAWS OF INERTIA "

"the law of inertia". This is because of that there is a natural tendency of objects to keep on doing what they're doing. All objects resist changes in their state of motion. In the absence of an unbalanced force, an object in motion will maintain this state of motion.
