Why is nitrogen often a limiting factor in plant growth?

Nitrogen is a mineral element required by plants. It is one of the major component of amino acids i.e. proteins, nucleic acids, vitamins and plant growth hormones as well.

Being a component of such a large no. of Biomolecules, nitrogen is essential for all types of metabolic activities, photosynthesis, respiration, cell growth, cell division, reproduction and overall plant growth, development.

So, if the amount of Nitrogen decreases in a plant, it adversely affect the growth, and other important processes which are crucial for plant life.

And hence, nitrogen is often a limiting factor.
