it is because the carbon is the only element to give the exact isotope of 12 as a mass.
the isotope of carbon with 6 proton and 6 neutron in its nucleus (carbon -12) give a mass of 12 which is necessary for determining the atomic mass unit.
carbon is also used to determine age..
