Why is oxygen written as O2? Can anyone please explain to me why it is that in the periodic table oxygen is written as just O, but elsewhere it is written as O2?

Oxygen in nature exists in molecular form.. but in periodic table we represents the elements..o2 is molecule of oxygen.. whereas o is element of oxxygen

I know as that in atmosphere the oxygen form O2 while the symbol of Oxygen is O.so in periodic table it is shown as O. to show only it's position.
