Ozone layer is in the stratosphere. It protects everything present on the earth because it absorbs the Ultraviolet rays which is very very harmful for the living beings on earth. The ultraviolet rays causes skin cancer and other harmful diseases in human beings and animals. If the ozone wouldn't be there then life on earth would be impossible because in heavy Ultraviolet radiation plants will die and the plankton will also die which is the food of most of the aquatic animals. So it's the protective shield of earth and very important for our survival.
