The Pair production is one of major interaction of gamma with matter: Photoelectric, compton scattering, Thomson and pair production and photo disintegration.The cross section of the occurenece of the interteraction depends on the low , medium and high energy of gamma.
Pair production is the interation of gamma photons with matter. If gamma energy is greater than 1.022 MEV , a couple of electron and positron with the rest mass of .511 MeV may be generated and gamma disappears . According to energy and mometum conservation laws , for gamma higher than this energy, the residual energy imparts to the kinetic energy of particles. It is obvious that in free space, momentum law is not satisfied.
