This so because double bond in the chain get the lowest number

Explanation:

Pent-3-ene is incorrect IUPAC name because;

On writing the structure according to the given name ;

CH_3-CH_2-CH=CH-CH_3

According to the name given the the double bond is present between third and forth carbon as per as IUPAC naming scheme.The numbering is done in such a way that the carbon containing the functional groups or double bonds or triple bonds gets the lowest number.

But if we number the carbon chain from opposite side the the double bond falls in between the carbon with number 2 and number 3 by which the name becomes; Pent-2-ene.
