peristalsis is important because by this movement food is transported to stomach.

In oesophagus the food is pushed towards the stomach by a wave of alternate contraction and expansion called peristalsis. It occurs all through the rest of the alimentary canal with the help of smooth muscles present in it's wall. so it is important.
