Why is petroleum refined by fractional distillation ?

To obtain Various fraction of petroleum i.e. Various useful substances from them Like Fuel oil,Diesel oil,Petrol, Petroleum gas,Kerosene
and many other products like Asphalt,paraffin wax,etc.
