phenol has more tendency to produce hydrogen ions than ethanol due to resonance in phenol ring.

Acidity of an organic compound is checked by the stabilty of its acid . Now acids donate H+ so the acid of an organic compound(OC) is found by removing one H+from this OC such that you remove the hydrogen that gives more stability after its removal, than other hydrogens of the OC. Now acidity is check by the stability of OC after hydrogen removal which is more in case of phenol due to resonance.
