phosphorous is kept in water because it reacts with air but doesn't with water

Phosphorus is a very reactive non-metal element . If phosphorus is kept open in the air, it reacts with the oxygen of air and catches fire. So, in order to protect phosphorus from atmospheric air, it is stored in a bottle containing water.
