It is insoluble in water, but soluble in carbon disulfide. It takes fire spontaneously in air, burning to the pentoxide. ... White phosphorus should be kept under water, as it is dangerously reactive in air, and it should be handled with forceps, as contact with the skin may cause severe burns.

mostly phosphorus are stored in water because they are strong. They catch fire very easily.

if we store phosphorus in air, it get burn and from a high damage to us.

that's why they are stored in water or in any liquid...
