earth pin is made thicker and longer so that the earth connection is made first. This ensures the safety of the device because if the appliances is defective then as soon as the live pin gets connected the current will pass and the fuse will blow off. Further the earth pin is made thicker do that even by mistake it cannot be inserted into the hole of live or nutral connection
