Permeable membranes allow for substances to pass through (molecules and ions), during active or passive transport diffusion.
Selectively permeable membranes only allow specific substances to pass through, while blocking others out.
Nonpolar and small polar molecules can pass through the plasma membrane. Examples are carbon dioxide and oxygen.
