Uses of potassium permanganate.Potassium permanganate is a point-of-entry treatment method that oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide into solid particles that are filtered out of the water. It can also be used to control iron bacteria growth in wells.

Potassium permanganate is a very strong chemical oxidizer with a low potential for causing fire or an explosion. The perchlorates are even stronger oxidizing agents but have high potential for causing serious problems. Hence they are not generally used except in extraordinary circumstances. The permanganates are strong enough oxidizers they will oxidize most organics to CO2 and H2O, leaving just traces of other materials left.
