Pottery was neolithic plastic. Starting with the neolithic and add the way up to the early XX century pottery took the place that is now occupied by plastic. All sorts of common household items that are now made in plastic (or metal sometimes) were made of pottery. Just like plastic, pottery is extremely long-lasting. It is essentially a man-made stone and will last almost as lobg as stone. Pottery is also brittle: a pottery jug could slip off your hand and shatter on the floor very easily. Sometimes the shatter were reused to pave floors, but most commonly they were just sweeped away and thrown in the closest waste heap.
