During pregnancy in human a gland called corpus luteum is formed. this glands helps in balancing and regulating the hormones during pregnancy for the safe conception and carrying of the baby. this gland produces progesterone which helps in the above mentioned functions. in the human body one one corpus luteum is formed.
While in the elephants five corpus luteum are formed. and all the glands do not form at the same and time. first one arises and then gradually slows down the production of progesterone and another gland is formed in its place.
That is how elephants manage to carry their babies (gestation) for a long time. almost for two years! since the elephant had very enormous body five gland are formed for the adequate production of progesterone.
