why is prism used for dispersion of light and not rectangular glass slab

Because white light is made up of all visible wavelengths , its colour can be separated by this difference behaviour. When light passes through glass, it encounters two interfaces i.e. one enterin other is leaving... A glass slab is able to produce spectrum but a rectangular glass slab does not.
