iron is not used to make permanent magnets because it is very soft in pure form. one material used to form permanent magnets is aluminium. when a insulated copper wire is used to make multiple loops creating a solenoid with the current flowing through it it forms a magnetic field like a bar magnet. when we pass any magnetic material like soft iron the magnetic field passes through it and makes it act like a bar magnet
