Rainbow is formed due to dispersion of sunlight by tiny water droplets suspended in the atmosphere after a rain shower. The tiny suspended water droplets act as small prisms. ... But during a rainshower, the sun is covered with clouds, due to which the sunlight does not strike the water droplets and rainbow is not formed.

This is formed by process called dispersion of light. that is when a beam of light is passed through a prisim it gets dispersed and comes out with different wavelengths that is 7 different colours. the same happens in the case of rainbow in which the sunlight is the beam and small water droplets acts as prisim and the rainbow us formed..... I have explained this phenomenon in simple manner hope it helps you ^_^
