Pulmonary reexpansion edema may be considered an iatrogenic complication due to rapid emptying of the pleural cavity. The incidence referred is less than 1%, and mortality can reach up to 20%. The greatest risk affects young patients with extensive pneumothoraces or pulmonary collapses of more than 7 days' duration.
