why is red light used as a traffic to stop vehicles

the red light has maximum wavelength, divers of vehicles should be warned for a long distance and it can observed in foggy atmosphere as compared to the other spectrum color

Red color light is least scattered by particles and dust suspended in air. So it is visible to a farther distance in fog with small water droplets suspended in air. Eyes are more sensitive to red color , blue color - than other colors.
