The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950. ... 26 January was chosen as the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by British Regime.

India's constitution came into effect on Republic Day, January 26, 1950. This date was chosen as it was the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day, which was held on January 26, 1930.The constitution gave India's citizens the power to govern themselves by choosing their own government. The Constitution was passed on 26 November 1949 in the Constituent Assembly. It was adopted on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system. 26 January was selected, because it was this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence was passed.Even before the independence, Congress had passed a resolution saying that from Jan 26 1930, India will celebrate its independence on Jan 26 every year. Thats why, even though the Constitution had passed on Nov 26 1949, it came into force from Jan 26 1950 and replaced the 1935 Government of India act.
